Blue Marsh Hawk - Orthetrum sp.
As the common name of this insect suggests, it can be found near wetlands and marshes in a similar to the Dragonflies that call Toronto home. There are likely many small flying insects to seize and (when the time is right) a mate to be found. However, this older male isn't blue...at least not anymore. Several male Dragonflies of the Orthetrum genus initially display a vibrant blue color on their head and thorax, and become coated in white, waxy pruinose as they age. Maybe it's faded blue or blue-grey at best. The Common Whitetail may provide more insight on this change Dragonfly males go through. Females are decorated with black that is accentuated with yellow and green depending on the specie, making them quite distinct from their male counterparts. And of course, to be sure we have a male individual in these pictures: the abdominal claspers are there! This Skimmer is most definitely a male enjoying the rivers and ponds of this Laos wilderness. Unfortunately, that's about all that can be gathered in terms of identification.
Since these photos come from my dear friend Sarali as she traveled through Asia, there is no live specimen to handle and inspect. Only the glimpses of pictures into a tropical world and its fauna. More seriously, due to overlapping geographic ranges and the similarities between male Blue Marsh Hawks (especially once they begin to turn white), narrowing a find down to a specie can be difficult, or outright impossible! I've done my share of searching and comparing in order to find a specie that matches this find, but the closest I've gotten in terms of a match is Orthetrum japonicum... I'm not confident on it. For the longest time, I thought it might've been Orthetrum glaucum (a more widespread find in Laos), but when researching that specie, there was a prominent detail missing: the last 2 abdominal segments should be prominently colored black. Even coated in pruinose, the segments would be seen. As such, this is likely isn't O. glaucum, but the possibility is always there. I looked back to the latter a few times since it has a dark-colored frons and clypeus (the face). Most of its relatives that look similar showcase white-colored faces, scratching off many other possible identifications. I'll revisit this post when I can with a more definitive insect ID, if at all possible.
Pictures were taken on November 13, 2018 in Laos with a Google Pixel.

꒦‧₊ ꒷ Skateboarding w/ Team Stan [Headcanons] ✧.*
✧.* tags: skateboarding idk man, comedy, college au
✧.* Charactions: stan marsh, kenny mccormick, kyle broflovski, butters stotch
a/n: I was writing a different set of headcanons and started thinking about this and it got so long that I decided to just make it another post.
masterlist
Tumblr media
Stan
Most skater aesthetic out of them all
even though he doesn't actually know anything
He bought the board because the like the IDEA of being someone who skates
But he’s too scared of falling down to actually do it
Much better at roller blading
but he'll NEVER admit it
mainly because people (cartman) would call him Ken because of the Barbie movie coming out
"Okay but why the fuck do you know that Ken uses roller blades in the Barbie movie?"
"Well actually that's none of your fucking business"
"Yeah okay dickwipe."
"THATS RICH COMING FROM A GAY ASS"
"It's literally pride month bro"
Tumblr media
Kenny
Kenny on the other hand is the epitome of “I could do it this morning”
Makes you all sit around for 30 minutes while he tries to do an ollie
“Dude it’s okay if you can’t-”
“NO MAN I CAN! KAREN SAW IT!”
Like okay bro you can do an ollie
Gaming sessions of Tony Hawk Pro Skater where he does a move and says "yeah I could do that"
Gets the most hurt
mainly because he doesn't care
worst cast- and i mean WORST CASE- he dies and he's back the next day
at least now he knows that he can't do a rail grind off the golden gate bridge
Tumblr media
Butters
Stan and Kenny try to teach Butters how to skate
turns out he doesn't really need their help
Butters ends up being 100x better than them INSTANTLY
Its the hawaiian blood
paddle boarding translates very well to skateboarding
“Woah! It’s so much easier when there aren’t waves coming at you!”
“I both hate you and idolize you right now”
“Stan close your mouth before a mosquito flies in”
You ask Butters to teach you and Kenny is AGHAST
Granted Butters is a shit teacher
“Just picture the Hawaiian islands holding your hands to keep you steady.”
“What the fuck did they do to you there.”
“Well for one, we got absolutely plastered so they’re tripping balls 24/7”
Tumblr media
Kyle
Kyle skates pretty fine
He and Ike were HUGE zeke and luther watchers fs
It was the only show they could agree on so sheila and gerald let them watch it
He always wears elbow and knee pads though
The others (cartman) give him shit for it
But he’s the only one going home without any bleeding appendages so who’s laughing now
The only one that can actually do an ollie
Doesn’t brag about it but once everyone else goes home he’ll show you some pretty sick tricks
"So you're like the red head from the gay anime."
"No."
"Now we've just got to find a blue haired canadian- omg wait isn't your brother from Canada-"
"No."
"Planning the road trip right now. If you take your brother's passport I bet you can pass it off as yours."
"I regret telling you anything."

Some Wooley and Crys softness been sitting on since Xmas cuz I wanted to put a little bit of a story with it, under the cut…
“Crys…you good vod?”
Of course he was good, what a strange question, Crys thought.
“Yeah? You?” He replied, not looking up from his task. The task he’d been doing for the last two hours and hadn’t made any progress on. He felt, more than saw Waxer shift. He probably had a dumb concerned look on his face too.
Crys looked up.
Yup there it was. Force love him.
“Listen, Wax, I gotta get these mousers up and running before end of shift, the naties’ve been complaining about the trash piling up on level…”
“Just got word Marsh’s lartie landed,” Waxer interrupted, a slight lilt to his voice. He began picking at the various MSE parts haphazardly peppering Crys’ workbench.
Crys’ breath hitched, and he swears he wasn’t trying to knock Waxer over. He just happened to be between him and…where he needed to go.
“Sorry Wax!” Crys shouted over his shoulder as he disappeared down the corridor.
He’d made his way from the tech shop to the hangar bay a thousand times before, but sometimes, sometimes on the way he forgot his left from his right. He had a lot to think about, not his fault, really.
“Kriffing hells,” Crys grumbled as the corridor dead-ended at the freshers. He scrubbed hands over his face in frustration, his ears perking up at the approaching dull clank of armored, heavy, and deliberate steps. He hoped it wasn’t anyone looking to chat.
“Thought I’d find you here,” came a voice from somewhere behind him, quiet and a bit raspy.
Crys wasn’t going to admit that his pulse sped up or that he was trying to suppress the grin spreading across his face as he turned to look.
Wooley was back.
“Oof, careful Cr—,” said Wooley, barely catching Crys as he leapt into his arms.
Still wearing his full ARC kit, and running on the fumes of just an hour’s sleep, Wooley staggered a bit trying to keep both of them upright, clasping his hands together under his partner’s butt.
Never one for hiding physical affection, Crys pressed soft kisses to the top of Wooley’s head, forehead, and nose, ending with a soft kiss to his lips, whispering “missed you a lot” between each peck.
“Same,” Wooley smiled and whispered back, pressing his forehead against the other’s, sighing in contentment.
“You sound tired. D’ya at least sleep during transit?” Crys asked, already knowing the answer.
“Course I didn’t. You’ve been on the Jai’galaar before” Wooley rolled his eyes, shifting his grip on Crys to find better balance. “Not sure when, but one of these days Marsh is…”
“...going to be grounded,” Crys continued, mimicking Wooley’s exasperation. “If he hasn’t been yet, love, he’s not going to be.”
Hoping to distract his partner from the familiar post-op rant, Crys began running fingers through Wooley's hawk, his nails catching lightly in the tiny knots that formed after days in a helmet. He delighted in the shiver he felt from Wooley as he smoothed palms over the scruffy grow out on either side of his head.
“He must have something on someone that he’s still flying is all I’m saying,” Wooley huffed.
Crys gave him The Look that meant ‘I’m done with this, let’s move on.’
Wooley shrugged, smiling like he’d been chastised by a trainer, and made to set Crys down, keeping his arms wrapped around him as he did.
“You done with your shift?” he asked.
“Nah, not yet,” Crys replied. “Soon-ish, though, just one more mouser to fix and…aww come on, that’s not fair!”
Wooley had lowered his head, looking up at him through dark eyelashes, his lip stuck out in a pout.
“Wooley I have to…” Crys tried to argue. “Alright, ok, the natborns can wait one more day for their karking MSE.”
“Thought so,” Wooley replied, grabbing Crys’ wrist and leading him down the corridor towards the ARC barracks.
+++
Crys fidgeted in the cold of the bunk room as he waited for Wooley to return from the freshers. The blue glow of his data pad was all that illuminated the small bunk space and was doing a fine job of planting the seeds of a headache. Didn’t matter, he needed to find something that would distract him from the thought “What if he didn’t come back” that had wormed its way into his head.
But Wooley did come back. He always came back and…
He felt the bunk dip behind him as warm arms wrapped around his waist, pulling him - rather un-gracefully - to sit between undersuit-clad legs.
“I could hear you thinking all the way in the fresher,” Wooley whispered in his ear, squeezing Crys around the waist. “I’m safe, you’re safe. That’s all that matters.”
“Yeah, but…” Crys started.
“Nope, not tonight. Tonight is for us,” Wooley replied, tugging the datapad from Crys’s hands.
“That was cheesy,” Crys teased, settling against Wooley’s chest, the warmth of the contact instantly relaxing his keyed up muscles.
“You love it,” Wooley replied.
“I do,” said Crys, snuggling in closely.

This weekend's not-entirely successful photos.
Top row: red-shouldered hawk in my neighborhood
Row 2: ground squirrel
Row 3: great blue heron
Row 4: unidentified gull (@lies?)
I also saw a rabbit, but wasn't able to get a photo.
I went back to Arrowhead Marsh today (which is where I took photos in rows 2-4) at (very) high tide. Although I still didn't see the rare Nelson's sparrow there, I did spot marsh wrens and Ridgway's rails, neither of which I'd ever seen before, as well as the teal trifecta, American wigeons, and a red-breasted merganser, among other birds.
Photographing birds is really difficult! It's hard to hold the camera still enough when zoomed in, and a tripod wouldn't help because (often) the birds are moving too much. Anyway, I still have a lot to learn, but I'm trying to get a lot of practice just getting the birds into frame with okay lighting. Eventually I hope to start using the manual settings, but I'm not ready yet.

MSB rambles: locations
As anyone who’s watched the Magic School Bus series knows, the show is mostly set in Walkerville, a made-up town. However, they never specify where it is, except for “in the USA.” They don’t specify what state, or even what region of the country it’s in. But here are my observations.
In “Gets Eaten,” Ms. Frizzle drives the class to the beach, while the bus is in normal bus mode. The beach looks like a California beach to me (based on my experience going to beaches there), and a sea otter makes a brief appearance. In the US, sea otters are only found along the west coast.
In a few episodes (Getting Energized, Rocks and Rolls, etc…), it’s shown that there are mountains/foothills just outside Walkerville, and that there’s snow on top for at least part of the year.
We know it snows during the winter in town as well. (Source: MSB Holiday Special)
There is a swamp with alligators and blue jays within driving distance of town, as shown in “Butterfly and the Bog Beast.” The whole vibe of the swamp feels very southern to me. (Note: “driving distance” might not necessarily mean said swamp is near town. Could just be that anywhere is driving distance on the Magic School Bus.)
In “Gets Swamped” we see that there is a more marshy swamp in town. The main vegetation is reeds and small shrubs, and the animal life consists of species such as snapping turtles, muskrats, wood ducks, harriers (marsh hawks), bullfrogs, red-winged blackbirds, and dragonflies. This suggests a more northern location for Walkerville.
In “Goes to Mussel Beach,” the mussels are described as “Mytilus californianus” aka the California Mussel, a species only found along the west coast. Again, we have no idea how far away the beach is from town, but it’s a different beach than the one in “Gets Eaten.”
In “Kicks Up a Storm” the outside temperature gets to a high of 99 degrees Fahrenheit— which, judging by the kids’ reactions, is too hot for them. As a Californian, I can sympathize with this.
In “All Dried Up,” the bus (in plane mode) must fly over a mountain range to get to what looks like the Sonoran Desert. Which mountain range they fly over is not specified.
In the book “The Truth About Bats,” it is stated that in order to see bats in Yosemite National Park, the class must fly to California— thus implying that Walkerville is not located in my home state.
In “Goes to Seed,” there is a Ruby-throated hummingbird (at least that’s what I think it is) in the garden at Phoebe’s old school. The Ruby-throated hummingbird lives mainly in the eastern half of the US.
In “In a Beehive,” Tim mentions a “big frost” approaching. Again, this suggests Walkerville is somewhere Up North. (We don’t get a “big frost” where I live— just a few smaller frosts.)
In “In the City,” we see that some of Walkerville’s urban wildlife includes peregrine falcons, red foxes, opossums, raccoons, and nighthawks. It is also implied that bears live in the woods outside of town.
In the book “The Wild Whale Watch,” the New England coast is a short drive from school, which directly contradicts my observations about coastal locations in the show.
The woodpecker in “Meets the Rot Squad” is a red-bellied woodpecker, a species found in the eastern US.
In the book “Rocky Road Trip,” Carlos says that he collected some of the rocks in his collection near “the Saddle River.” I looked it up, and in the real world, Saddle River runs through New York and New Jersey. (But for all we know, the Saddle River in the book could be made up just like Walkerville.)
In “Ups and Downs,” we see that Walkerville is located near a good-sized lake— large and deep enough for a submarine to dive in, and with plenty of underwater vegetation.
In terms of continuity, there is no continuity when it comes to where the heck Walkerville is. This sometimes frustrates my overanalytical brain. So, I leave it to you, fellow Magic School Bus fans, to answer the question:

I got tagged by @saladruiner to do this challenge with creating your DA characters in this Picrew. This was pretty fun! I didn't do any of my Inquisition ladies because I wasn't happy with how they came out.
First one is: Elaina Cousland. My warrior Cousland that specializes in the Champion subclass along with Spirit Warrior later on. She fights with mostly a sword and shield, but will switch to dual blades when the situation calls for it. Her main ship is Nathaniel Howe but in canon, she is the Queen of Ferelden.
Second up is an original character: Kalinda Marsh captain of The Medusa's Revenge. A fic that I'm still working on but eventually Kalinda and her crew wind up working for the Inquisition. The only thing I couldn't get right were her eyes. The creator didn't have the exact color I wanted which is a sea-green color. Kalinda is a rogue and sailor who does whatever it means to survive. Loyalty is what she looks for and she does not tolerate betrayal well.
Third is: my beautiful Salem Hawke. She's a mix of purple/blue Hawke. Rarely does she use aggressive choices. Salem is a mage who specializes in spirit healer. For elemental magic she mostly stays with fire and ice magic if the situation calls for it. She romances Anders but is heartbroken with how that ended. Salem chose to let him go regardless of what happened to her. She volunteers to stay in the Fade during the Inquisition, stating her time was done in Thedas and she would like to choose how she goes out.
Tagging: @briarfox13, @shaken-veil, @starsandskies, and whoever else wants to play! I like seeing all the creations!

My list of Queer books.
Now my labeling only has to do with the main protagonist, except for the books labeled "Queer" some of those the main protagonist is not Queer but the book has lots of Queer main and side characters. I only included the first books to make it easier but some of these are series.
The problem with making lists for books is that there's So. Goddamn. Many! New ones are being released every single day so all I can really do is add as I go. I also take recommendations so let me know of books I missed (specify what category they go in please 😊). I could also add specific Sexualities and Genders but right now I'm just doing basic categories because this is going to take time.

Nine of my favourite flora and fauna photos I took in September 2024 and month summary
The photos are of; Red Deer at Bushy Park, Common Seal on the Beaulieu River, young Coot at Bushy Park, Barn Owl in a flying display at the Hawk Conservancy Trust, Clouded Yellow at Milford on Sea, Lesser Yellow Underwing moth at home, Ruddy Darter on Brownsea Island, Common Lizard at Thursley and hawthorn berries with a ladybird on.
Some of my most magical wild moments of a mesmerising September were watching mammals; immersive views of Common Seals and Grey Seals, enchanting Red Squirrels and ravishing Red, Roe, Fallow and Sika Deers bringing glorious late summer/autumn feelings of splendour. Grey Squirrel, Rabbit and Brown Rat provided some nice moments too.
It was a marvellous month of avian movement with many of my top birds of a fine birding moth enjoyed on migration in and out including Ospreys, Hobby, Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Curlew Sandpiper, Brent Geese, Pintail, Wigeon, Wryneck, Pied Flycatcher, Spotted Flycatcher, Wheatear, Whinchat, Yellow Wagtail, a rare for Lakeside Tree Pipit seen on my patch, a Chiffchaff in the garden and unusually Sand Martin at Bushy Park and epic scenes of many House Martins and a few Swallows moving through places. Other highlights this month included incredible views of majestic White-tailed Eagles twice at Newtown and Poole Harbours, Marsh Harriers, Sparrowhawks including one coming into the garden, Kestrel, Sandwich Terns, Shag, Curlews, Common Gulls, Mediterranean Gull, Egyptian Geese, Gadwall, Teal, Shoveler, Starlings, Ring-necked Parakeet, Grey Heron, Greenshanks, Sanderlings, Turnstone, Ringed Plover, Snipe, Great White Egret, Cattle Egrets, Little Egrets, captivating views of Spoonbills in Poole Harbour, Little Grebes, Whitethroat, Grey Wagtail, Rock Pipit, Dartford Warbler, Cetti's Warbler heard and Kingfisher. Cormorant, Stonechat, Jay, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker and lots of nice views of Great Crested Grebes including the chicks, Moorhens and Coot were other highlights at Lakeside. It was great to spend a day spellbound by birds of prey and others on an amazing day at the wonderful Hawk Conservancy during the super week off of day trips with so many phenomenal places visited and much wildlife seen.
Butterflies did quieten down this month for me but I saw some fantastic ones, headlined by adding the excellent Clouded Yellow to my year list a great final piece of the jigsaw to another memorable butterfly year for me. I also really enjoyed seeing Small Coppers at Bushy Park and Southbourne, Meadow Brown, Small Heath, Speckled Wood especially seen well at Lakeside, Common Blue, female Adonis Blue at Old Winchester Hill, Green-veined White, numerous Small Whites and Large Whites especially on sunny days, beautiful Painted Ladies, Red Admirals and Peacock. I enjoyed seeing a fair few moths this month too including dashing Willow Beauty, Garden Carpet, L-album Wainscot, Light Brown Apple moth, sumptuous Lesser Yellow Underwings, pretty Lunar Underwing, Square-spot Rustic and Silver Y and Vestal in the day. Dragonflies and damselflies took a large amount of the limelight again as they dazzled at this well lit and beautiful time of year, Brown Hawker, thrilling Black Darter, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter views, Keeled Skimmer on Brownsea Island, resplendent Migrant Hawker, gigantic and eyecatching Southern Hawker and exquisite Emerald Damselfly were special to see.
It was captivating to watch Common Lizards at Thursley Common and a Common Frog on a wet New Forest walk at Puttles Bridge. Symbolising the shift to autumn I saw loads of craneflies this month which was memorable. I also enjoyed seeing Long-winged Conehead, Common Green Lacewing, hoverflies, bees, wasp, hornet, enigmatic Devil’s coach horse beetle and ground beetle at Thursley, ladybird, Forest Bug, Dock bug, and Grey Silverfish and spiders at home.
Key flower/plant sightings this month included my first ever skullcap at Bushy Park, lots of great devil’s-bit scabious one of my favourites, harebell, common toadflax, restharrow, marjoram, wild basil, water mint, great willowherb, sundew, bog asphodel, sea rocket, wild radish, seaside daisies, sand spurrey, yellow-horned poppy, sea kale, rock samphire, mercury yarrow, wild carrot, pineappleweed, mignonette, hedgerow crane’s-bill, red clover, white clover, comfrey, a strong month for yellow with ragwort, fleabane, tormentil, sowthistle, oxtongue and autumn hawkbit, montbretia, self-heal, gorse, ivy, plantain, black medick and bell and common heather painting the landscape a splendid purple. There was a lot of nice fruit to see including apples, dogwood berries, guelder rose berries, rowan berries and fine ruby hawthorn berries. Sunflower, pretty fuchsia, buddleia, roses, rose hips, firethorn berries and other colourful plants were nice to see at home this month.
